Maurice Benard recently featured General Hospital legend, Genie Francis (Mayor Laura Collins), on his YouTube episodic, State of Mind.

The series quite often educates viewers on the different aspects and challenges of mental health, as each week, celebrities open up about their own struggles.

However, this two-part feature sees Francis in part one discussing her early career, how she met her husband Jonathan Frakes, her social anxiety, and more.

But one high point of the interview, which soap viewers of today can relate to, is the fact that soaps have shifted from something that won them over in the first place: love in the afternoon.

Maurice Benard Says Soaps Need to Get Back to Couples

Of late, the soaps have been more focused on corporate shakeups, political scandals, mob wars, and so on. Benard, who has seen his character, Sonny Corinthos, over the years, in numerous pairings, didn’t shy away from speaking on the shift.

Touching on the subject, he said, “They don’t do couples anymore. I mean, if you think about that time when you came back and I started just started, Sonny and Brenda, Luke and Laura, Lois and Ned, Jason and Robin. You can just keep…

Benard continued, “Couples were the thing. Now they’re not doing as many. I don’t know why.

Francis chimed in with a very important question: “Do you think the pandemic changed it because of intimacy?

For Benard, he could agree to some extent. “Maybe,” he said, adding, “I mean, it could be, but I truly believe.. Look, I don’t question anybody about how they’re doing their jobs, but they should get back to couples. I think that’s what helps it.
