This week on Maurice Benard’s State of Mind, the mental health activist and General Hospital star hosted a conversation with Jacob Jensen.
Wearing a gold Star Trek uniform the same as Captain Kirk from the Original Series, Benard spent a good portion of the beginning of the show talking about anxiety vs. depression.
Maurice Benard shared a story of his father asking Benard which is worse, and from Benard’s perspective anxiety is worse than depression.
After making his points and using personal experience to inform his perspective, Benard transitioned to introducing his guest Jacob Jensen.
Jacob Jensen is an actor and psychologist, most notably working in sports related films such as Will Smith’s in King Richard and Zendaya’s Challengers. Coming soon Jensen takes the lead in the upcoming romantic dramedy Believe directed by Fred Copeland.
Immediately Benard asks about Jensen being attacked by a nest of bees. With the enthusiasm of someone who has made it on the other side of a one of a kind encounter, Jacob Jensen detailed his saga with a nest of bees while on the phone with his mother.
Jensen said all in all he was likely stung at least ten times before coming onto the show with Maurice Benard. Wondering if tomorrow would be the worse day, Jensen explained that he was only 24 hours removed from the experience while 48 hours is when the discomfort is meant to reach the peak.
Benard compares being in the middle of a swarm of bees to anxiety. Feeling tension in every direction and challenging yourself to make the right choices to stay safe.
Benard asked Jensen about his upbringing in the Mormon faith. Benard proclaims his fascination with the Mormon faith and talks about some details regarding Jacob Jensen growing up with a twin sister.
Transitioning to intelligence, Benard compliments Jensen on being one of the smartest people Maurice knows. They discussed how Jensen skipped grades and found himself challenged when he finally started taking high school courses in the 7th grade.
Jensen doesn’t consider himself that smart, just someone with perseverance to get through ten years of grad school to become a Sports Psychologist.
Jensen and Benard spent the hour talking about sports, the mental state of athletes. They traded thoughts and stories of how anxiety can create or destroy athletic performance no matter how much training one has.
Ways to cope with anxiety through practices such as meditation are explored as ways to remain focused.
As is usual with State of Mind, Benard and his guest hit several topics as the free flowing conversation turned into topics like prophetic dreams, injuries from wear and tear, and traveling the world exploring far off locales.
In closing, they touched on the theme of the day anxiety once more and discussed the power of State of Mind.
