The soap opera community is mourning a heartbreaking loss. Paul Avery and his wife, Sheila, were killed in a house fire in New Jersey.

According to reports, the tragedy occurred early Tuesday morning, just before 1 a.m. Authorities responded to a fire at a home on Mohican Road, but by the time first responders arrived, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Sadly, neither Paul nor Sheila survived.

Paul Avery’s Daughter Shares Heartbreaking News

Taking to Facebook, the couple’s daughter shared the devastating news.

Alongside a photo of her parents, she wrote:

“I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning. We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so. We’re grateful to the Blairstown Fire Department for their efforts. Service plans to follow.”

Remembering Paul Avery

Soap fans may best remember Paul Avery for his role as Hughie on the ABC daytime drama All My Children, a role he began playing in the 1980s.

His acting career started in the 1970s and included appearances in Superman, Three’s Company, ABC Weekend Specials, and Tales from the Darkside.

Outside of acting, Avery wore many hats throughout his life. He was a writer, pilot, politician, soldier, husband, and father. He also served on the Blairstown Township Committee and worked as Executive Editor of the Ridge View Echo.

Those who knew him remember a man who dedicated himself to both his family and his community.
