Performer of the Week
If anyone had ever told me that an actor whose character was unconscious all week would ever be a Performer of the Week contender, I would have laughed or given them a side eye, but I would have been wrong, and this week Donnell Turner, who plays Curtis Ashford on General Hospital, proved that. Yes, Curtis was shot in the back and spent most of the week in surgery; however, he had an amazing out-of-body kind of thing when he flatlined in the OR, and those are the scenes that clinched it for him.
Not that he didn’t play a great unconscious guy too, because he did. His eyelids weren’t fluttering or anything, and not every actor can pull that off. But where Turner really shined was in the heavenly park with his long-deceased (and never before seen onscreen) mother, Irene (Cheryl Francis Harrington). The depth of emotion he played in those scenes brought tears to my eyes during every segment, and the fact that the two actors had never worked together before made it even more amazing.
Donnell made you feel the deep connection Curtis feels towards his mother and how profoundly her loss actually affected him and his life. In their final moments, when Curtis had to make the choice to stay with his mother or go back to his family, his anguish over saying goodbye was devastatingly clear, and Turner’s tears and cracked voice in those moments were phenomenal acting and so very relatable to anyone who had lost a parent. Donnell Turner of General Hospital is our Performer of the Week. Congratulations, and thank you for the good cry!
