The Bold and the Beautiful fans, get ready to clutch your pearls—because Liam Spencer almost met a very permanent end. Actor Scott Clifton revealed on the red carpet at the 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards that his character was this close to being killed off.
Speaking with Daytime Confidential’s Melodie Aikels, Clifton shared that showrunner and head writer Brad Bell originally planned to write Liam out of the show entirely—with a devastating brain tumor diagnosis.
“I was supposed to be on my way out. That was the plan,” Clifton admitted. “No, yeah, it wasn’t like this master plan to trick the audience. Mr. Bell called me up to his office—probably about a year ago now—and said, ‘Listen, I really love this character, but I think this is what I want to do.’”
And no, it wasn’t a joke. Clifton made it clear the exit plan was very real.
“He told me, ‘You’re not going to come back to life a week later… this is going to be your swan song, so to speak.’”
Scott Clifton is Grateful for the Story Change
The Emmy-winning actor said that for most of that arc, he truly believed he was saying his goodbyes. Then, in true soap fashion—but behind the scenes—Brad Bell had a change of heart.
“It wasn’t until a week later that he [Brad] said, ‘Actually, I changed my mind.’”
Needless to say, Clifton was relieved—majorly. Losing a long-term role on a daytime drama is no small thing, especially when you’ve been such a huge part of the show’s heartbeat for years.
Of course, Liam wouldn’t have been the first major character to bite the dust on B&B. Fans still remember the shocking deaths of Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery), Aly Forrester, and Phoebe Forrester. But this time, thankfully, Liam dodged the soap death curse.
Instead of an actual brain tumor, it turned out the entire medical scare was part of a scheme cooked up by none other than Dr. Grace Buckingham—all to scam some quick cash. Classic soap twist!
So while Liam may not be in soap heaven, he’s still very much alive and entangled in all the drama down here on earth—just the way we like it.
