Shanica Knowles, who played Simone Burch on The Young and the Restless for a number of episodes in 2018, returns to Lifetime Television in Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story, which is based on a true story. Knowles joins a cast that includes Paige Hurd, Stephen Bishop, and Brad James.
The movie unfolds after Cowan’s husband’s arrest when a family friend, Musa (Bishop), offers to take her and her children into his home temporarily. Laura is relieved, thinking this kindness will help her get back on her feet. However, this blessing quickly turns into a nightmare as she and her children face mental and physical abuse and dehumanizing conditions. Laura is assaulted by Musa and held captive with her children in a garage. She later learns she is not alone in his torment. Despite the darkness, Laura keeps her faith and documents her ordeal, eventually sneaking a note to the outside world that leads to her rescue.
The film is set to premiere in January and is produced by Poke Prod for Lifetime with Sean Dwyer and Elizabeth Cullen at the helm as executive producers. Directed by Manu Boyer and crafted from a compelling script by Avery O. Williams, Cowan takes on the role of co-producer for this exciting project.
Shanica Knowles is renowned for her iconic portrayal of Amber Addison on the beloved Disney series ‘Hannah Montana.’ She also boasts an impressive portfolio of Lifetime films, including ‘Megachurch Murder’, ‘Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michelle ‘le’, ‘Babysitters Nightmare’, and ‘Christmas on the Menu’, as well as a role in the rom-com ‘Time Capsule‘.
As a singer/songwriter, Shanica’s first big break in music came when she won 1st place on “It’s Showtime At the Apollo” at the age of 11 in 2002. She is excited to bring her own dramatic/music series to television, where she will showcase her talent as a rising country singer in the tumultuous music industry.
Girl in the Garage: The Laura Cowan Story premieres on the Lifetime channel on January 18th, 2025.
