We recently published an article about the importance of soap operas and how they have the unique opportunity to bring awareness to issues that we face in our everyday lives. And The Young and the Restless has taken that opportunity to shine a light on breast cancer with Sharon Newman’s latest storyline.
The show has done an amazing job, through the voice of Sharon Case, in portraying not only the emotions that someone who found out they have cancer goes through but in showing the true facts of the situation as well.
Sharon found out that she had cancer after discovering a lump in her breast during a self-examination. According to breastcancer.org, a self-exam should be part of your monthly health care routine, and you should visit your doctor if you experience any changes. A fan shared on social media that after seeing the storyline on television, a member of their family was prompted to do their own exam. She discovered a lump that was determined to be cancerous, but thanks to early detection she will be getting the necessary treatment. We at Soap Opera News wish their family all the love and support during this time.
Thank you @sharonlcase for helping save a life! Your SL prompted my cousin to do a self exam. A lump she found is cancer. However, it has not spread to lymph nodes! She’ll be cancer free soon! We 💕 you! These storylines are needed for awareness for early life saving detection.— Michelle Wilson💕 #Shadam #TeamAdam #TeamSharon YR (@MichelleWW1969) January 30, 2020
