Unlike other television shows, fans of daytime dramas have the unique opportunity to watch an actor play a role for decades. So, the word recast can send chills down many soap opera viewers’ spines! But every now and then the audience is pleasantly surprised by a casting shake-up.

Zach Tinker, who is known for his time as Fenmore Baldwin on The Young and the Restless, was tapped to play Sonny Kiriakis in Peacock’s limited series Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem. The beloved character, who is part of television history, was previously played by Freddie Smith. We would imagine stepping into such a role would come with its own set of challenges and pressure. However, Tinker has proven that he was up for the challenge!

The actor revealed that while he researched Sonny’s background, he didn’t want to be influenced by Smith’s portrayal. Instead, he opted to bring his own take on the character while keeping the essence of the fan-favorite. Fans have quickly been able to see his emotional range as a performer as Sonny went from believing that Will (Chandler Massey) was having an affair to taking on the highly entertaining drag persona Sonny Delight. His onscreen chemistry with Massey, Billy Flynn (Chad), and Greg Rikaart (Leo) has also been a highlight. Additionally, we would love to point out how INCREDIBLE it is to see LGBTQ+ characters at the forefront of a story! Representation matters!

Tinker has brought fresh energy to the role and has #Wilson fans asking for more. We would give his performance an A+! Will he bring the character back to Salem? We would like to see it happen!
