The soap opera world is filled with all sorts of over-the-top storylines: resurrections, doppelgangers, baby stealing and swapping, etc. However, this month Soap Opera News is shining its Star of the Month honor on Scott Clifton (Liam Spencer.) He (along with other members of The Bold and Beautiful cast) gifted us with a beautiful and gut-wrenching performance full of heartbreaking moments that we most likely and unfortunately have all had to face involving people we love.
Fatal Diagnosis
Liam was initially diagnosed in the hospital with a brain bleed after collapsing (twice), which is bad enough. Then it was discovered, after subsequent scans were performed, that it was worse, much worse than initially diagnosed. Liam is dying due to an inoperable mass on his brain.
Beats Nailed
Clifton put in work!
As a loving father hell bent on not missing his daughter, Kelly’s (Sophia Paras McKinlay), first daddy/daughter dance, Liam rips tubes out of his body and discharges himself from the hospital against the advice of his doctors. He was not going to disappoint his daughter.
As a father determined to put a smile on Kelly’s face after being too late for them to attend the dance, Liam along with Kelly’s mom, Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) created an unforgettable and magical evening right there at home, strobe lights and all. And Clifton/Liam added a few dance moves too! And those funny face pictures with Liam and Kelly were adorbs!
Stand-Out Scenes
The scenes that stood out the most for us were those with Liam, Steffy, and Finn (Tanner Novlan). Clifton pierced our hearts as he artfully exhibited each stage of emotion when Steffy told Liam that he is dying: an incredulous laugh, disbelief, denial, defensiveness, and pushing back with a litany of reasons why it couldn’t be happening to him (eats healthy, exercises, too young). Good stuff!
The standout moment was when Liam asked Dr. Finn for the truth. When Liam saw the look in Dr. Finn’s eyes, he believed. Clifton’s reaction was skillfully emoted with his eyes and countenance, subtly and realistically bearing the devastating realization.
That moment of brilliance was quickly eclipsed by another one when we saw Clifton flip Liam’s switch. Liam declared he wasn’t going down without a fight and if it was his time, he was determined to savor every second.
Liam said he has faith in something beyond science. He does acknowledge the reality of science and points out if he is going to die, he has work to do to make every second count. But right now he has no time to accept a fatal fate and has too much to live for. Love that!
For most of us, scenes like these can bring with them difficult memories. Life can be life. A big thank you to Clifton and company for reminding us that even in the toughest times, we have the gifts of family, love, faith, and the human spirit to help us get through!
Congratulations, Scott Clifton for being named Soap Opera News’ Star of the Month for April.
