Whether you are Team Nina or Team Carly (and here at Soap
Opera News, we are huge fans of both!) there’s no denying that Cynthia Watros
(Nina) and Laura Wright (Carly) are powerhouse performers and they dominated
their scenes (as always) this past month on “General Hospital”.
Wright has crying down to an art form and she had to shed
many tears as Carly this month: [continued] grief over Jason, grief over Liam
(Brando and Sasha’s baby), and those incredible court room scenes where Carly
learns the truth about Sonny and Nina’s relationship followed by her confronting
Sonny about his feelings. This was the
moment fans have been waiting for and Wright rose to the occasion as
always. Fans were on the edge of their
seats when the court room scenes played out.
Fans were able to feel Carly’s wrath through Wright’s brilliant acting
choices such as her clenched jaw and her intense glares at Sonny and Nina
(honestly if looks could kill, Nina would be in trouble!). Carly’s world as she knows it has been
flipped upside down: she lost Jason after falling in love with him again and now
found out that her husband is possibly still in love with the woman who she
feels has wrecked her family. That sense
of heart break and betrayal were felt through Wright’s performances when she
confronted Sonny outside the courthouse. When Carly asks Sonny if he still has
feelings for Nina and he dodges Carly’s questions; Wright’s look of distraught along
with her sound of heartbreak in her voice resonated with fans.
Watros had just as heavy material and she knocked her scenes
out of the park. Nina was at the
hospital to support Sasha and Brando and fans could feel Nina’s heart break for
their loss over baby Liam through Watros’ brilliant performance. Watros shines with Maurice Benard (Sonny) in
every scene they share. The chapel scenes
where Nina tells Sonny that their love was the purest love she’s ever had; Watros
shed even more light on just how real their relationship to Nina is and just
how desperately she wants to hang onto it where fans can feel empathy for
Nina. This is further emphasized when
Nina pleads with Willow to not tell anyone what she overheard. In the courtroom scenes, Nina tries to stop
Scott from questioning Willow and when she fails to do so, fans can see Nina feeling
like her world is crumbling down as the truth is revealed through Watros’ spot
on facial expressions. While Nina is
sorry for hurting Sonny and his family, Nina fans rejoiced when Nina was unapologetic
toward Willow for choosing to expose the truth on the stand. Watros’ line delivery in telling Willow that
since she didn’t get down in the mud with the rest of them by telling the truth
was so spot on. Watros shows Nina’s softer,
more vulnerable side whenever she runs into Sonny. Watros blends Nina’s complex emotions of love
and guilt perfectly even when she has no dialogue; it shows in just how Nina
looks at Sonny.
Fans can’t wait to see what happens next in their storylines
(we can just imagine what a Carly and Nina run in would result in!).
**Honorable mention goes to Maurice Benard for being a phenomenal
leading man to both of his leading ladies.
