Long before she was navigating the high-stakes drama of Port Charles as Jordan Ashford, Tanisha Harper was living a completely different life. Her journey to General Hospital wasn’t a straight line. It involved a sudden pivot from a medical program, a whirlwind nationwide tour with Nike, and a successful career in the cutthroat world of commercial modeling.

In a recent chat on the Soapy podcast, hosted by Greg Rikaart and Rebecca Budig, Harper opened up about what really goes on behind the scenes of the entertainment industry. She shared everything from the harsh realities of the modeling world to the chaotic audition process that landed her a dream role on daytime television.

The Pressure to Stay Perfect

Harper’s career kicked off when she was scouted at a mall in Phoenix, Arizona, at just 14 years old. While her mother was initially skeptical, a huge campaign with Nike quickly changed things. Suddenly, Harper was balancing high school with a major national tour.

She eventually moved to Los Angeles to model full-time. She booked lucrative beauty campaigns and walked runways for major brands, but the industry began to shift in a way that didn’t sit right with her.

The arrival of social media changed the rules of the game. Harper noticed that casting directors started prioritizing follower counts over years of hard work and built portfolios.

“I saw that it no longer mattered if I had 20 magazine covers and did these prestigious campaigns. Because I didn’t have a million followers and at the time I probably didn’t even have an Instagram,” Harper said. “I think that was kind of a tipping point for me.”

Beyond the digital shift, the constant scrutiny over her physical appearance began to take a toll. The demand for flawless perfection became exhausting.

“With modeling, it was just about go and be pretty,” Harper explained. “And there’s a lot of pressure… I mean, a lot of pressure. At that time, you know. You show up if you have a pimple, and you hear everybody whispering.”

She eventually decided she wanted more substance from her career. This prompted her to shift her focus entirely to acting.

Tanisha Harper: Breaking Out of the Box

Transitioning into acting brought a whole new set of challenges. Instead of being judged for not being perfect, Harper ran into the opposite problem. Casting directors frequently stereotyped her based on her modeling background. They assumed she couldn’t handle serious, gritty roles simply because of her looks.

“People do look… you know they’ll say, ‘Oh well, she’s too pretty.’ Not that I’m saying I am, but you know, ‘she’s too pretty for this job,’ or they won’t even consider me for different roles,” Harper revealed.

She recalled a specific audition where she had to fight extra hard to prove she was more than just a face.

“I remember once there was a role I wanted to go out for, but ‘she’s too pretty for it.’ I auditioned for something else. They eventually ended up a year later, bringing me back to do the role that I wanted to do because when they saw the audition, they’re like oh. And I went in just very normal, no makeup, and I’m like, I can do this. You just have to give me the opportunity.”

Stepping Into Port Charles

That breakthrough moment eventually led her to daytime television. During the height of the pandemic, Harper auditioned for a mystery role on General Hospital. At the time, the scripts were so heavily guarded that she didn’t even know which character she was actually trying out for.

“Initially, they didn’t say what the role was for, but it was… I thought I was going to be playing a district attorney,” Harper said.

It wasn’t until a week before filming started that she received the full script and found out she was taking over the established role of Jordan Ashford.

Producers told her not to watch old footage of the previous actresses because they wanted her to bring a fresh perspective to the character.

Stepping onto a soap opera set is a notorious trial by fire. The pace is incredibly fast, and actors are expected to memorize dozens of pages of dialogue every single day. For Harper, the hardest part was keeping track of Jordan’s massive web of interconnected relationships.

Playing Jordan

“The hardest part for me was understanding, because my character had a lot of different relationships with a lot of people on the show,” Harper said.

“There’s a lot of history with a lot of different people, and so everyone was trying to… all the other actors were trying to explain their relationship with my character. So I kind of understood, but it was a lot. We have a lot of people on the show, so I’m like, okay, now you are the 20th person that Jordan’s had a relationship… you know, a friendship, something with, and I’m trying to put all of that together and remember the lines and make a connection.”

Years later, Harper has firmly made the role her own. Jordan has since transitioned from Police Commissioner to Deputy Mayor, and she is currently tangled up in a dangerous undercover assignment.

Through all the twists, turns, and industry shifts, Harper’s willingness to walk away from what was comfortable is exactly what allowed her to build a career on her own terms.
