Former Head Writer and Executive Producer of The Young and the Restless, Maria Bell is battling breast cancer. Bell hasn’t told many people about her battle but in an Instagram post, she opens up about her fight. She wrote, “19 rounds of radiation DOWN! I haven’t told many people but I’ve been fighting breast cancer since April- with a terrible post-op infection, all kinds of hurdles I’m here to say I completed this step of the journey! I couldn’t have done it without my amazing family and friends. Working in Hollywood I’ve seen firsthand about how and why we can’t talk about it- you’ll lose jobs or people will think you’re over: I will never forget the Sony exec who wanted to fire one of the Y and R writers for having breast cancer. Can we all be unafraid of speaking our truth- we are all going through things- let’s normalize cancer! It sucks but there’s still so much I want to accomplish. Don’t count me out!“
Bell worked on Y&R in different capacities from 1992 – 2012 and The Bold and the Beautiful 1989 – 1992. She is the sister in law of Lauralee Bell (Christine Williams, Y&R) and Bradley Bell (Head Writer a B&B). We send her good thoughts and some love.
