As loved ones gather in Salem to honor the late John Black (a tribute to the late actor Drake Hogestyn), many fans have noticed one glaring absence — Sami Brady, played by longtime fan favorite Alison Sweeney. For a character who considered John a second father, her absence felt surprising. So, why is Sami not at John’s funeral Days of Our Lives?
Alison Sweeney Explains
According to a report from Soaps.com, Alison Sweeney was unavailable during the filming of the funeral scenes. Sweeney clarified:
“I don’t know if it was meant to be a secret — so I don’t want to step on their toes — but I came back a little bit later because I couldn’t be there for those scenes. They arranged for me to do it a week later, maybe two weeks later. I do come in and have scenes about John, but my timing was a little bit off after all of that.”
This explains why Sami is not at John’s funeral Days of Our Lives, but we’re happy to hear that she will be returning to mourn John in future scenes.
The show also provided an in-universe explanation for Sami’s absence. In a recent episode, Sami calls her son Will Horton (Chandler Massey) to explain why she won’t get to attend the funeral.
Her reason? Her daughter Sydney suffered an accident at the airport and required surgery.
