Earlier this year, The Bold and the Beautiful made a bold move by killing off villain Sheila Carter, only to bring the character back just two months later. Bradley Bell, the show’s Head Writer, recently explained to Lynette Rice of Deadline the reasoning behind this dramatic decision.
Bell explained, “Villains typically need a cooling off period, which just adds to the drama to their return and Sheila needs to cool her heels once in a while. Sheila has been a ratings dynamo, and that’s why she’s murdered so many people. She is now happily married and working at a restaurant. Somehow people forgive her because she’s always looked for love and acceptance. That’s something that we can all relate to.”
Bell also talked about why they killed off Stephanie Forrester in 2012. The legendary character was portrayed by Susan Flannery from the show’s start in 1985 until the character’s passing. He told Deadline, “You’re getting rid of a lot of history. But if the story is that good, it’s important to make that decision.” Flannery was done and recasting such an icon was a no-go, so Bell orchestrated a storyline where Forrester succumbed to cancer.
Bell adds, “It just seemed like a poetic way for her to go. It’s always scary and it’s always difficult to say goodbye, but again, very necessary. You have to kill them every once in a while in order to keep your credibility as a writer. And I promise myself every year, I’m going to kill more people.” (Photo: JPI)
