If you’ve been watching Melissa Claire Egan for the last two decades, you know she’s a pro at handling high-stakes drama. But as it turns out, the real-life drama she’s been navigating lately makes a soap opera script look tame. Sitting down for a candid chat on the Soapy podcast with hosts Rebecca Buddig (Taylor, The Bold and the Beautiful) and Greg Rikaart (Leo, Days of Our Lives), Melissa opened up about a whirlwind year that included a devastating house fire and a health diagnosis that quite literally saved her life.

A Silent Health Scare That Changed Everything

The most jarring reveal was her recent battle with heart disease. Melissa, who is only 44 and seemingly healthy, found out she had plaque buildup in her LAD artery—a condition ominously known as the “widowmaker.”

What’s wild is that she didn’t have a single symptom. It was only thanks to some routine blood work from her OB-GYN and a subsequent calcium scan (which she admits she almost blew off for months) that doctors caught it.

“After this, call, thank her for saving your life,” her cardiologist told her. Now, she’s on a mission with the American Heart Association to make sure other women don’t skip those “optional” scans, even if insurance is stubborn about covering them.

But the health scare was just one piece of a very heavy year. Egan, who plays Chelsea Lawson on The Young and the Restless, also shared the heartbreaking story of her new home in the Pacific Palisades.

Just 18 days after closing on the house, it burned to the ground in a massive fire. In true Melissa fashion, though, she managed to find the “glass half full” angle: because of a lease-back agreement, she hadn’t actually moved her family or their belongings in yet. While the financial hit was massive, she’s just grateful her kids are safe and sound.

The conversation wasn’t all heavy, though. The trio took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, laughing about Melissa’s “Crazy Annie” days on All My Children and the infamous “traveling crib” that has been passed around between a circle of soap stars like a rite of passage.

She also reflected on the 20th anniversary of her start in soaps. She notes that playing Chelsea on The Young and the Restless feels more grounded than ever now that she’s a mom herself.

Despite the “prison yard” chaos of raising two young boys and the stress of a health crisis, Melissa’s trademark wit was on full display.

Whether she’s talking about her speed-talking habit or her vanity-driven (but very practical) short haircut, she remains one of the most relatable faces in daytime.

It’s been a year of “shedding” the old and surviving the unexpected, but if this interview proved anything, it’s that she’s coming out the other side stronger—and faster-talking—than ever.
