Played by veteran actor Alimi Ballard, the sharp-suited, intense character has quickly made a splash on the canvas as the newest force in town.

While daytime fans are currently watching Ballard lock in his targets, his acting career actually spans decades of iconic television. He got his start back in 1993 as Frankie Hubbard on the ABC daytime soap Loving, before going on to star in hit primetime series like Numb3rs—where he spent years playing FBI Agent David Sinclair—alongside stints on CSI, NCIS, and The Catch.

Laura Wright Had Been Pushing for Ballard to Join GH

Perhaps the biggest surprise from Ballard’s sit-down was learning that his arrival on General Hospital wasn’t just a random casting twist. It turns out daytime royalty Laura Wright (Carly Spencer) had been quietly pulling strings behind the scenes for an entire year!

“Laura had told me about a year ago, ‘I’m trying to get you in here. I’m talking to Mark Teshner, I want to get you over here,‘” Ballard revealed, admitting that he had never shared this story publicly until now. “So when this thing came about, it came around.“

Wright and Ballard worked together on Loving. Laura Wright played the series regular role of Ally Rescott Alden Bowman from 1991 until the show’s cancellation in 1995.

He Almost Turned Down the Audition

Even with Wright in his corner, Ballard almost missed out on the role entirely. Having recently relocated his family to Atlanta, he hadn’t done an in-person audition in six years due to the pandemic—and the thought of flying clear across the country on short notice almost made him pass on the opportunity.

“It is my first in-person job interview in six years since COVID,” Ballard explained. “I sat with it for a minute and I was like, ‘No, I’m not going to do that.’ Then a friend of mine was like, ‘Buddy, can you feel it?’ And then I got quiet and I was like, ‘This is special.’ When new opportunities or things that haven’t happened for a long time start to happen, pay attention.”

After deciding to lean in, Ballard scrambled to shave his beard, buy a last-minute plane ticket, and endure a grueling travel delay that left him arriving an hour late to the studio! Luckily, legendary casting director Mark Teshner greeted him with open arms, setting the tone for what Ballard describes as an incredibly warm, welcoming set.

First Week Panic and Turning to “The Homie”

Despite his extensive acting resume, stepping onto the fast-paced daytime wheelhouse after years in primetime brought on a sudden wave of panic during his very first week on set. Ballard immediately turned to his longtime pal Laura Wright for a reality check.

“I panicked the first week, let me be with all honesty,” Ballard admitted. “The first week I was like, ‘Laura, what is this?’ She was like, ‘Calm down.’ I was like, ‘Yo girl, what are we doing here? What is this? This says 100 [pages], what are you doing here?’ She was like, ‘Relax.’”

Ballard shared that he took a humble approach to learning the ropes at GH, asking questions, listening to daytime veterans, and embracing the unique, fast-moving pace of the show.

And clearly, that approach paid off! Agent Baines is already deeply embedded in the Port Charles drama—from investigating Jack Brennan’s disappearance to arresting Nina Reeves and dragging her off to Steinmauer! And obviously, the drama is only just getting started.
