The NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds received some discouraging news this week. According to a new report from Deadline, the series starring Zachary Quinto has officially landed on the “likely to be canceled” list.

It is not the kind of update fans were hoping for.

The Writing on the Wall

Despite a strong creative launch and a prime time slot following The Voice, the numbers simply have not been in the show’s favor. Brilliant Minds is currently ranked as NBC’s lowest-rated drama. Reports say ratings have dropped by double digits year over year, even falling behind fellow low performer The Hunting Party.

That is never a great sign, especially this late in the season.

What makes it more frustrating is that the show had real momentum at the start. The concept was fresh, the performances were solid, and there was genuine buzz. But in network television, ratings still rule the conversation.

A Major Blow for Soap Fans

NBC recently rolled out its post-Olympics schedule, and Brilliant Minds did not come out unscathed. The network pulled the show from its Monday 10 PM slot, replacing it with expanded episodes of The Voice and a new comedy block.

When a network starts filling your time slot with other programming, it definitely becomes concerning.

For soap fans, the potential cancellation hits even harder. This season welcomed Days of Our Lives star Al Calderon to the cast as a nurse, alongside One Life to Live veteran Teddy Sears. Their additions brought even more crossover appeal and drew daytime viewers into the series.

Is There Hope for Season 3?

There are still six episodes left to air in season two, so nothing is official yet. But with NBC reportedly leaning toward new projects like The Fall and the Rise of Reggie Dinkins, the future of Brilliant Minds feels uncertain.

Fans are holding out hope that the remaining episodes spark a late surge in viewership. Stranger things have happened in network television. Still, the signs right now suggest the series is facing an uphill battle.

  1. I should get paid as a consultant. If I like a show, it MAY get a second season. If I love a show, the actors better start looking for new opportunities. It will be canceled. If I can tolerate a show, everyone will be talking about it. And finally, if I would’nt waste my time on it, it will be on at least 6-7 seasons. Where do I apply?

    1. EXACTLY! Couldn’t have said it better myself! I never watched Brilliant Minds since the 1st episode. But when “Javi” left DOOL & went to that show I started watching it & started to really like it. Figures! Hope Al Calderon can return to DOOL. 🫤
