This week’s (June 26 – 30, 2023) Couple of the Week is General Hospital’s Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) and Carly Spencer (Laura Wright), or Crew as their fans call them.
Carly and Drew have not had an easy road, together or apart and that doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon even though they can finally take their relationship public and openly love each other. Drew just got handed a 3-year prison stint for inadvertently being a party to Carly’s unintended insider trading and Carly’s got a fine that is pretty much every penny to her name and no source of income to support herself or her kids. Carly tried to help and, as is usually the way when Carly tries to help, everything got blown to hell.
Drew owns a media company, Aurora, and wanted to merge it with his family’s company, ELQ, to get control back into Quartermaine hands and out of the hands of Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart). To do this he needed to drive Aurora’s stock prices up. Carly’s son works for Aurora and is also a Quartermaine so Carly wanted to help them by investing. She insisted on doing it even when Drew and her son Michael (Chad Duell) told her not to. Shockingly to absolutely no one, she didn’t listen and she invested heavily in Aurora, even putting up her half of her beloved MetroCourt hotel as collateral.
The merger tanked when Ned (Wally Kurth) sided with Valentin when it came time to vote and Aurora stock plummeted. Carly lost her half of her hotel to her mortal enemy, Nina (Cynthia Watros), and was left reeling, unsure of what her life would be like going forward. Carly didn’t realize that what she had done was insider trading until Ned threatened to report her if Drew tried to take over ELQ again. Carly and Drew had been friends up until now but had recently become more when Ned leveled his threat so they decided to keep their relationship secret so the SEC wouldn’t suspect them of insider trading.
They grew closer and it was harder to keep the secret, Nina got suspicious when she saw them hugging at the hospital but they denied anything was going on other than friendship. Carly ex and Nina’s current, Sonny (Maurice Benard), told Nina that Carly and Drew were seeing each other but had to keep it quiet. She later found out about the insider trading issue and in a moment of anger at Carly, had her lawyer drop a dime to the SEC. Carly got hauled in at her son’s (and Nina’s daughter’s) wedding but Drew was out of town…helping to save the world and Nina’s daughter’s bone marrow donor so the SEC had to wait for him to get back.
The lawyers told Carly and Drew that the SEC case was strong. The one bright spot for them was that since they were already caught, they could go public with their relationship. Carly turned down the SEC’s offer of leniency to turn on Drew and turned down an offer to turn on her mob boss ex-husband too because if he went to jail then his enemies would kill her and her kids to take power for themselves. Nina felt guilty for a moment because of what Drew had done for her daughter Willow (Katelyn McMullen), but that quickly passed and she decided to get Carly the longest sentence she could by trying to get Drew to turn on her.
Nina’s plan didn’t work and Drew decided that the best thing for everyone was for him to take a plea that included jail time in exchange for Carly only getting a fine. Carly was adamantly against it and wanted them to fight but Drew had already made the deal. When the day came for his sentencing, things went sideways, of course, and the judge rejected the sentence they had agreed on which was 6 months in a minimum security facility and instead gave Drew 3 years in a maximum security prison.
Carly flipped out and begged Drew to withdraw his plea but he refused. He accepted his sentence and the judge gave him a week before he had to report. Drew said his goodbyes to his daughter and family and friends and then went to Carly’s so they could have one last night together. Carly felt guilty and they argued about that, Drew tried to convince her that it was his choice and not her fault. Carly couldn’t understand why he would make such a sacrifice for her and Drew finally told her what Crew fans had known for a while, he was in love with her and would do anything to protect her.
Drew told Carly what he wanted their future to look like and made it clear that was the plan. Carly had voiced her love for Drew to her son recently so we already knew she felt it too but she said it to Drew for the first time and told him that she would wait for as long as she had to so that they could share their lives together. There was a tender kiss and then Drew lit a fire and they danced and laughed together before slowly undressing each other and making love in one of the most amazing love scenes in recent General Hospital history.
Afterward, they held each other and Carly made him promise to stay safe and come home to her. Drew swore that he would and they kissed again. Neither knows that bad guy turned good (or at least pretending to), Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), is making plans for Drew in Pentonville and Carly still has her financial issues to deal with but they love each other and are determined to make sure that this is not the end of their love story.
Crew fans were treated to a spectacular week for their ship and though there are rough seas, and a love scene drought, coming their way, Laura Wright has assured their fans that this will all make them stronger and that Carly remains safe and happy in Drew’s capable hands.
