Award-winning journalist Matt Gutman is heading to CBS News, stepping into the role of chief correspondent.

Starting January 5, 2026, and based in Los Angeles, Gutman will be a familiar face across CBS mornings and the CBS evening news, take a lead role on 48 hours, contribute to future seasons of 60 minutes, and even fill in as anchor for the network’s flagship broadcasts.

From ABC to CBS

Gutman brings nearly three decades of on-the-ground reporting, covering some of the biggest stories of our time—from the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the COVID-19 pandemic, the death of George Floyd, and devastating natural disasters from flash floods in Texas to hurricanes across the globe.

Joining CBS News from ABC News, where he served as chief national correspondent, Gutman is known for diving headfirst into stories and bringing viewers along for the ride.

“Matt Gutman goes there. He brings the audience along with him to whatever story he is covering, and he approaches his work with the qualities we look for in all our journalists: fearlessness, energy, and relentlessness,” said Bari Weiss, CBS News editor-in-chief in a press release. “I cannot wait for him to get started.”

Gutman shared his excitement about the move: “I am thrilled to be joining CBS, a network with TV news’ most storied past and most exciting future. With Bari and Tom at the helm, our mission is to tell the most important news stories, give a voice to those who might otherwise not be heard, and take our audience to places they wouldn’t otherwise see—telling it straight along the way.”

At 48 hours, Gutman will join Peter Van Sant, Erin Moriarty, Natalie Morales, and Anne-Marie Green, taking an integral role in the investigative series.

About Matt Gutman

Throughout his career, Gutman has distinguished himself with fearless reporting from the field. He’s covered every major Middle East conflict over the past 25 years—from the early 2000s Palestinian uprisings and the fall of Saddam Hussein to the U.S. war in Afghanistan and, more recently, the Israel-Hamas conflict and hostage crisis.

In 2023, he was one of the first journalists on the ground in Israel after the Oct. 7 terror attack; in 2022, he reported from Ukraine during the Russian invasion. His work has also taken him to Thailand, covering the dramatic rescue of a youth soccer team trapped in a cave, and to disaster zones across six continents.

Gutman frequently contributed to ABC’s 20/20, covering high-profile criminal trials, interviewing death row inmates, and amplifying the voices of victims of violence. He joined ABC News in 2008 as a radio correspondent, after starting his journalism career as a freelance print reporter covering the war on terror in the Middle East.

A decorated journalist, Gutman has earned nearly every major award in TV news, including Emmys, Edward R. Murrow Awards, duPonts, Gracies, and NABJ honors. He is a graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts.
