The soap opera world is mourning today following the sudden passing of Patrick Muldoon. Known to millions as the original Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, Muldoon died this past Sunday, April 19, at the age of 57. Sources indicate the cause of death was a heart attack.
Patrick wasn’t just a familiar face on daytime TV; he was a versatile talent who transitioned between music, film production, and acting.
From the Gridiron to Hollywood
Born and raised in San Pedro, California, Patrick grew up in a household shaped by his father, William Patrick Muldoon II, a lawyer, and his mother, Deanna.
Long before he was a household name, Patrick was a standout athlete. He attended Loyola High School before heading to the University of Southern California.
At USC, he balanced life as a Sigma Chi fraternity member with the physical demands of playing tight end for the Trojans football team, eventually graduating in 1991.
A Legacy on Screen and Stage
Patrick’s big break came shortly after college when he landed a role on Saved by the Bell, but it was his 1992 debut on Days of Our Lives that made him a star. He originated the role of Austin Reed and played it until 1995. Of course, that wasn’t the end of the story, because Muldoon stepped right back into the role nearly two decades later in 2011.
Outside of Salem, Patrick made waves in primetime as the villainous Richard Hart on Melrose Place. He also earned a spot in sci-fi history playing Zander Barcalow in the 1997 hit Starship Troopers.
Whether he was starring in a gritty television film like Black Cat Run or appearing in fan-favorite Hallmark and Lifetime features, Muldoon always brought a unique energy to his work. He even proved his range on stage, taking on the role of Edmund in a 2006 production of King Lear.
Patrick Muldoon was a staple of the industry and a beloved figure for fans of “The Greatest Generation” of soaps. His presence will be deeply missed by everyone who followed his journey.
Soap Opera News extends our sincerest condolences and prayers to Patrick’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of grief. May he rest in peace.
