Longtime TV talk show host Phil Donahue died on Sunday night after battling illness for a long time, his family announced. He was 88. n 1991, Donahue made a guest appearance playing a TV host in an episode of The Bold and the Beautiful.
Donahue died at his home surrounded by his family, including his wife of 44 years, actor Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, his grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie as reported by TODAY.
The journalist revolutionized the modern format of issue-based daytime talk shows with audience participation. His show became one of the most influential programs of its time, earning Donahue nine Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding host.
Phil Donahue, born in 1935 in Cleveland, began his journalism career working in radio in the 1950s. Apart from hosting his own show, Donahue regularly appeared on TODAY from 1979 to 1988. Donahue made a brief return to TV in 2002, hosting a show called “Donahue” on MSNBC, which was canceled after several months.
