Eight years ago, Freddie Smith began an unforgettable and life-changing journey. On this day in 2011, Smith began playing the role of Sonny Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. The character who is the only biological child of Justin (Wally Kurth) and Adrienne (Judi Evans) was first mentioned in 1991. He was later introduced in 2011 as the pair’s openly gay son – and the first gay character in the show’s history. Sonny’s major stories include a gay bashing storyline, his love story with Will Horton (Chandler Massey) and Paul Narita (Christopher Sean), involvement in his family business, and friendship with Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn). Throughout his time in Salem, Sonny has held the posts of Entrepreneur, Legal Aid, and CEO. For his outstanding work on the show, Smith earned 2 Daytime Emmy Award Nominations in the category of Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series in 2013 and 2015, winning the award for the latter.

Happy 8th anniversary Freddie Smith, watch some of his early scenes below!

Seven years ago today on June 23rd, 2011, Sonny Kiriakis appeared on screen for the very first time!! I can’t believe it’s been seven years already. I remember my first day like it was yesterday. With Sonny being the first openly gay contract player on Days of Our Lives, we all had a huge responsibility to tell an honest and truthful story about an out and proud gay man. I am so honored to say that not only did we tell a true love story, but did in such a way that Sonny Kiriakis has become one of the most liked and rooted for characters on the show! I want to thank Sony and NBC, the executive producers, writers, directors, cast and crew for telling a brave love story at a time when courage was needed to shed light on equal rights. I’m so happy that our story has impacted so many peoples lives in a positive way. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! #anniversary #nbcdays
