Philip K. Boyd is best known to television viewers as Oscar, a role he plays on Tyler Perry’s hit primetime drama “The Haves and the Have Nots”, which airs on OWN. Boyd is not just an actor but also a writer who can also be seen on Netflix on “In-Lawfully Yours” as Chaz. He also recently celebrated his first wedding anniversary to Polina Boyd whom he married in August, 2016. His upcoming projects include the highly anticipated mini series “Feud” and work on “Do You See Me” and “The Dancing Dodo”. We had a lovely chat with Boyd who dished on playing Oscar, marriage life, working with Tyler Perry, upcoming projects and much more. Read the full interview below!
Philip: Thank you so much. Being a part of the show has been such a gift. I had no idea that I would become such a big part of the show. Initially, I was only slated to do 10 episodes, but after the first season of Oscar, Tyler Perry decided to have me come back for more. It’s been a real thrill getting to be a part of the show for as long as I have been and getting to work with so many wonderful and talented people. At first, I came in and didn’t know what to expect, and I’m here to tell you, Tyler Perry is a machine. He shoots very fast and demands a lot from his actors. Being a part of this series so far has been such an incredible learning experience and I’m so grateful that I was given such a great opportunity.
Philip: It’s funny you ask that because I think everyone on the show goes through struggles at some point delivering the material. We have the best script supervisor I’ve ever worked with. Mr. Perry has a demanding shooting schedule that allows for some actors doing up to 65 pages of dialogue a day, which is absolutely insane. It’s like doing a movie a day. Last season I think I did 32 pages in a row with 5 costume changes, and I don’t know how I kept that all straight. I think that’s a part of Mr. Perry’s genius. That he can hire actors, a lot of times unknown, but can recognize that the people he hires and know they’ll deliver.
Philip: Coming on the show in the second season, I had been given just a glimpse of what Oscar’s character was like. I didn’t really know that he’d be taking all of Candace’s money and then sticking around to try and get her to work with him. As far as Oscar’’s overall motive, I don’t think the audience will ever get the chance to really see what Oscar is all about. In 2017, we get a chance to see him outside of the “asset recovery” business a little bit with his friend David (Peter Parros) and see that he’s more street wise and knowledgable of how conniving people can be and he uses that to make money from people who don’t run in those circles.
Philip: Oscar as a lead man? I think Oscar doesn’t want to be in the front of things, but rather hide in the background and see how things play out. I was hoping I’d see another romance in the cards for Oscar, but from what I saw in the future scripts, it appeared that Mr. Perry was focused on other story lines coming up in The Haves and The Have Nots. Maybe he has something else in mind for Oscar somewhere else. Nothing is out of the realm of possibility, so we’ll see.
Philip: I will tease you with this; There isn’t a big cliff hanger coming up with Oscar’s character at the end of 2017’s season, but in 2018 there will be A LOT of Oscar. Get ready!
Philip: It’s tough to say. I was initially slated to do 10 episodes in the second season and now it’s turned into like 49. If you’ve watched the show long enough, we all know that Mr. Perry loves his dramatics, so who knows.
Philip: The Haves has been such a great vehicle to getting other jobs. I was fortunate enough to play Maximilian Shell in the Ryan Murphy mini series ‘FUED’ and have done a couple of films that are set to be released later this year. I’ll be posting about those projects in my social media accounts as well. @philipkboyd
Philip: We did it! Can’t believe that it’s been a year already. Year one just flew by. I feel so lucky to have her as my wife. Looking back on our first year, we’ve been blessed with the opportunity to travel quite a bit and enjoy each other. We have grown so much in a years time, that I’m really looking forward to what the future brings with our marriage. I get so much support at home, that it makes pursuing my career a lot easier.
Philip: I think once we have a better grasp of what the future holds, then we’ll start working on that . Kids can take up a lot of time and money and we want to make sure we are able to have both! When the time is right, we’ll make it happen.
